Virginia Kaye Leinweber Leeds Scholarship Fund

Benefits Pleasant Hill High School Graduate

“Mom was an inspiration to all who knew her,” says her daughter, Leah Erke. Although Virginia “Ginger” Leeds was confined to a wheelchair at age 33, she kept her enthusiasm for life and sense of humor.

Ginger didn’t let her disability stop her from pursuing her dreams. She returned to college at age 43 where she completed her bachelors degree and two masters degrees. After finishing school, Ginger returned home to Pleasant Hill.

“She was able to live alone in her home for the next 15 years because of the wonderful people who helped her with her personal care,” says Erke. “She could not stand on her own so everyday things others take for granted like showering and fixing dinner were impossible for her without help.”

The purpose of the Virginia Kaye Leinweber Leeds Scholarship Fund is to provide a scholarship to a Pleasant Hill High School graduate interested in pursing the field of nursing. “Mom loved young people and wanted to see everyone have the opportunity to go to college,” says Erke. “I chose the field of nursing as a way to honor all of the nurses who cared for her.”

Thanks to the Community Foundation, Ginger’s legacy and inspiration can now live on forever.
