Sunset Home Fund

Sunset Home shares the love of Jesus Christ through Life in a Caring Community. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving seniors of the area. We are governed by a community volunteer Board of Directors and proudly related to the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of The United Methodist Church.

More than 127 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pfeiffer had a strong desire to provide care and shelter for the elderly. From their generous donation, Sunset Home was officially chartered October 1889 as “The Old People’s Home of the St. Louis German Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.” We are proudly related to The United Methodist Church and fully engaged as a faith-based organization with the Illinois Great Rivers Conference and the Golden Cross Ministry (which includes Chaddock). From modest beginnings, the Pfeiffers could not have imagined the immensely positive influence their philanthropic gesture would have on thousands of people and the service provided to this community.

We deliver all levels of care at Sunset Home in a Christian environment. Sunset is licensed as a 182 bed Skilled Nursing facility which includes Skilled Nursing, Intermediate Care, a state-of the-art Short-Term Rehabilitation Center and Adult Day Care services. We also own and operate two Independent Living communities: Sunset Villas (16 units on Sunset’s campus at 418 Washington) and Sunset Apartments (92 units located at 8th & Broadway). Additionally, we have the largest State Certified Alzheimer’s Unit in Southern Illinois (The Haven – 43 beds) and we are the only facility with a Certified Dementia Practitioner on staff.

Today, Sunset Home employs over 220 people. Residents of Sunset Home range in age from 54 to 103 years old. We serve all races and denominations and do not discriminate based on ability to pay. We offer healthcare to those who are unable to pay the full cost of their care, which averages 50 percent of our census.

We are grateful to the Community Foundation as a valuable partner to charitable organizations like Sunset Home by supporting a broad range of philanthropic opportunities for donors and for the contributions that provide funding in our community.
